Antarctica is the coldest, driest, windiest continent on Earth — and the least studied. Covered by an ice sheet up to 4,800 metres thick, it holds 70 per cent of the world's fresh water. Where is Antarctica and what makes it unique?

Antarctica is the southernmost continent, centred on the South Pole and surrounded by the Southern Ocean. With an area of approximately 14 million km², it is larger than Europe. It has no permanent human population and no indigenous people — it is the only continent for which this is true.

Why is Antarctica so cold? Several factors combine:

  • Its high latitude means low solar angles and months of polar night in winter
  • Its high elevation (average surface elevation ~2,300 m, the highest of any continent) means thinner, colder air
  • The ice sheet reflects up to 80–90% of incoming solar radiation (high albedo), so very little heat is absorbed
  • It is surrounded by the Southern Ocean, which is isolated by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current — the world's strongest ocean current, which prevents warm water from reaching the continent

What plants and animals live in Antarctica?

Given its extreme conditions, Antarctica supports relatively little biodiversity on land — but the surrounding Southern Ocean is extraordinarily productive.

On land and ice: No trees or shrubs can survive. Only two species of flowering plants — Antarctic hair grass and Antarctic pearlwort — grow in the ice-free Peninsula area. Mosses, lichens and algae are the dominant vegetation. Micro-organisms (bacteria, tardigrades) survive even in the interior ice.

Around the coast and sea ice:

  • Emperor penguins: The world's largest penguin; uniquely breeds in winter, huddling in large groups to survive temperatures of –40°C and 200 km/h winds. They are fully adapted to the polar environment — no land-based predators, insulating fat and feathers, counter-current heat exchange in limbs to prevent heat loss.
  • Leopard seals: Apex predators; hunt penguins and other seals.
  • Krill (Euphausia superba): Small crustaceans that are the keystone species of the Southern Ocean food web. Blue whales, seals, penguins and seabirds all depend on krill. Krill abundance is directly linked to sea ice extent — they feed on ice algae.

The food web is relatively simple but extremely productive. The upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich water around Antarctica feeds phytoplankton, which feeds krill, which feeds almost everything else.

How is Antarctica governed?

Antarctica has a unique governance structure with no parallel on Earth. No country owns it. Twelve countries signed the Antarctic Treaty in 1959 (entering force 1961), agreeing to:

  • Use Antarctica exclusively for peaceful purposes — no military activity, no weapons testing
  • Guarantee freedom of scientific research and exchange of data
  • Freeze all existing territorial claims (seven countries had claimed territory; those claims are neither recognised nor relinquished)
  • Prohibit nuclear testing and radioactive waste disposal

The treaty now has 54 signatory states. Later agreements added environmental protection (the 1991 Protocol on Environmental Protection — the "Madrid Protocol") which designates Antarctica a "natural reserve, devoted to peace and science" and prohibits mining until at least 2048.

The treaty system is widely regarded as a success in international governance — but it faces growing pressure:

  • Non-signatory countries (particularly China and Russia) have expanded their research presence
  • The 2048 review of the mining prohibition is approaching

What are the SEEP threats to Antarctica?

Social: Tourism is the main social pressure. Over 74,000 tourists visited in 2022–23, primarily arriving by cruise ship to the Antarctic Peninsula. Tourism brings fragile ecosystems into contact with human activity — footfall damages moss and lichen communities that took decades to establish; ships can introduce non-native species and pollutants. However, the industry is largely self-regulated through the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), and no permanent tourist infrastructure exists.

Economic: Antarctica holds significant mineral and hydrocarbon resources — the Transantarctic Mountains and continental shelf are thought to contain coal, oil and natural gas reserves. The Madrid Protocol prohibits mining until 2048, but geopolitical pressure may mount as global resource demand increases. Fishing — particularly for krill and Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) — is a significant industry in the Southern Ocean, managed (with mixed effectiveness) by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).

Environmental: Climate change is the most serious threat. Key effects include:

  • The Antarctic Peninsula is one of the fastest-warming regions on Earth — temperatures have risen by about 3°C since 1950
  • Ice shelves are collapsing — Larsen B Ice Shelf (area of 3,250 km²) disintegrated in 35 days in 2002

Antarctica is not simply a remote, frozen wilderness — it is a critical component of global systems.

Sea level: The Antarctic ice sheet contains enough ice to raise global sea levels by approximately 60 metres if it fully melted. Even partial melting (from the less stable West Antarctic Ice Sheet) would cause catastrophic flooding of coastal cities worldwide.

Ocean circulation: Cold Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) — formed by the freezing of seawater around Antarctica — is one of the main drivers of deep thermohaline circulation. Changes to Antarctic sea ice extent affect the formation of AABW and therefore ocean circulation globally.

Climate regulation: Antarctica's high albedo (reflectivity) helps regulate global temperature. As ice melts, darker ocean water is exposed, absorbing more heat — a positive feedback loop that accelerates warming.

Science: Antarctica is the best location on Earth for certain kinds of research. Ice cores drilled from the ice sheet contain trapped air bubbles that allow scientists to reconstruct atmospheric CO₂ levels over 800,000 years — among the most important climate data available.
