Videos are good at explaining something you do not yet understand. Practice questions are good at making what you understand stick and turning it into marks. Most students over-use the first and under-use the second, because watching feels productive and being tested feels like failing.

The comfort trap

Watching a clear explanation of a topic produces a genuine feeling of understanding. That feeling is real — while the explanation is in front of you, you do follow it. The problem is that following someone else's reasoning is a different skill from generating your own, and the fluency of a good explanation is easy to mistake for your own competence.

Practice questions produce the opposite experience. They surface exactly what is missing, immediately and uncomfortably, which is why students avoid them and why they work. The discomfort is the mechanism, not a side effect.

If your child reports having revised for two hours and cannot produce anything they wrote or answered, that time was almost certainly spent watching.

What videos are genuinely good for

They earn their place in three situations.

Unsticking. When a student has tried a topic, hit a wall and cannot proceed, a clear explanation from a different angle is exactly the right tool. This is the highest-value use — it is targeted, short, and prompted by a specific need.

Processes that move. Some ideas are inherently dynamic or spatial: a chemical reaction over time, plate movement, a mechanism in physics, a construction in geometry. A moving explanation can make these clearer than any paragraph.

A first pass on something entirely new. For a topic missed through absence, a video is a reasonable way to get an initial framework before attempting questions.

What they are not good for is revision in the strict sense — consolidating material already taught. Re-watching an explanation of something you were taught in class is the video equivalent of re-reading notes.

What practice questions are genuinely good for

Revealing the gap between recognising and producing. A student can follow a worked solution completely and still be unable to start the same question alone. Only attempting it exposes that.

Building exam-specific skill. Practice questions teach command words, mark allocation, how much to write, how to show working — all of which are worth marks independently of subject knowledge.

Making memory durable. Retrieving information strengthens it in a way that re-encountering it does not. Every attempted question is a retrieval, whether or not it is answered correctly.

Giving a plan. A marked set of questions produces a specific list of what to fix. Two hours of video produces nothing to act on.

Sequencing the two

The order matters, and the common mistake is doing it backwards — watching everything first, then attempting questions only if there is time left.

A better cycle:

  1. Attempt first, briefly. Try two or three questions on the topic cold, before any input. Five minutes. The point is to find out what is missing, not to succeed.
  2. Watch or read to fill the specific gap that attempt exposed. Short, targeted, stopped as soon as the gap is closed.
  3. Attempt again, unaided. Same or similar questions, no notes.
  4. Mark strictly and write one word beside each lost mark.
  5. Return in a few days with fresh questions on the same topic. Spacing is what turns a fixed gap into durable knowledge.

Steps one and five are the ones most often skipped, and they are the ones doing the work.

Making video time active

If videos are going to be used — and for some topics they should be — a few habits stop them being passive.

  • Pause and predict. Before the explainer works through a step, pause and try it. Then compare.
  • Watch with a pen. Not transcribing; writing down the two or three things that were not already known.
  • Set a stopping condition. "Until I understand why the equation balances" rather than "until the video ends".
  • Close it and reproduce. Immediately after, write the method from memory. Whatever cannot be reproduced was not learned.
  • Follow with questions the same day. A video not followed by practice fades quickly.

How to tell which one your child needs right now

Ask them to attempt a question on the topic without help. If they cannot start — no idea what the question is asking, no route in — they need explanation, and a video is a reasonable choice. If they can start but go wrong partway, or produce an answer that is on-topic but scores badly, they do not need more explanation. They need more attempts, marked strictly, with the errors classified.

That single test prevents most wasted revision time, because it distinguishes "does not understand" from "understands but cannot yet perform" — and only the first is a video problem.

Where should practice questions come from?

Exam boards publish past papers and mark schemes for their qualifications, and schools usually hold additional material and question banks. For KS3, textbook and end-of-unit questions work well. What matters more than the source is that questions are attempted unaided, marked against a real scheme, and that the errors are classified rather than just counted.
