The access gap the entitlement is meant to close

What to actually ask your child's school

Because the entitlement exists on paper before it exists in every school's timetable, the useful move is to ask a specific, answerable question rather than assume the policy has already changed anything locally:

  • Is triple science offered to every pupil who wants it, or only to particular sets? Get a direct answer — "we offer it" is not the same as "any pupil can opt in."
  • What is the entry criterion, if there is one? A baseline test score, a teacher recommendation, or a fixed cut-off in Year 8 or 9 science assessments are all common; ask which one applies and how firm it is.
  • If my child is borderline, is there a route in? Some schools will move a highly motivated borderline pupil into the triple set on request; others treat the criterion as fixed.
  • Does the school have a specialist physics teacher for the triple classes? Given the national shortage, this is a fair and specific question — not an accusatory one.
