How does the practical component work?

Component 3 accounts for forty per cent of the total GCSE grade. It has two parts:

Part 1 — Practical performance in three activities:

Pupils are assessed performing in three different physical activities. They must include activities from at least two of the following categories:

  • Team sports: football, netball, basketball, hockey, cricket, volleyball, rugby
  • Individual sports: athletics, swimming, gymnastics, badminton, tennis, golf, cross country
  • Outwitting opponents: squash, table tennis, boxing

Pupils are assessed against national criteria by their teacher and internally moderated. A sample of performances is also externally moderated by the exam board. Marks reflect skill level, decision-making, and consistency of performance rather than simply winning or finishing first.

Pupils complete a written task in which they analyse their own or another person's performance in one of their chosen activities. This involves:

  3. Designing a programme to address areas for improvement
  4. Evaluating the effectiveness of that programme

How is GCSE PE graded?

GCSE PE is graded 9–1. The three components combine:
