The Leitner box is a set of dividers in a shoebox that decides which flashcards you see today. Cards you get right move further back and return less often; cards you get wrong go straight to the front. It gives paper flashcards the spacing an app would give them — without a screen.

The problem the Leitner box solves

Most students who make flashcards use them badly. They shuffle the whole deck, go through all sixty cards, feel pleased, and repeat the same sixty cards the next day. Two things go wrong. First, the cards they already know eat most of the session — comfortable, but a waste of time. Second, the cards they keep getting wrong come round no more often than the easy ones, so the gaps never close.

Spacing fixes both, but doing it by hand is fiddly. You would have to remember which card was last seen when, and how well it went. The Leitner box does that bookkeeping physically: the position of a card in the box is its schedule.

What you need

  • A shoebox, a plastic wallet box, or an old envelope file
  • Four or five card dividers (cereal box card cut to size is fine)
  • Your flashcards — index cards, cut-up card, or shop-bought blanks
  • A pen

That is the whole kit. Cost is close to nothing, which matters if you are making cards for eight or nine subjects.

How to build and run the box

Step 1 — Set up the boxes. Label your dividers Box 1 to Box 5, front to back. Box 1 is "every day". Box 2 is "every other day". Box 3 is "twice a week". Box 4 is "once a week". Box 5 is "once a fortnight".

Step 2 — Start everything in Box 1. Every new card you write goes into Box 1, whatever the subject. Do not try to guess which cards are easy. Let the box find out.

Step 3 — Work the boxes that are due today. On any given day, take out the boxes whose turn it is. On a Monday you might do Box 1, Box 2 and Box 4. Tuesday might be Box 1 and Box 3. Write the rota on the lid so you are not deciding it each time.

Step 4 — Answer out loud before you turn the card. Read the front, say your full answer aloud or write it down, then flip. This is the part people skip, and it is the part that does the work. Looking at the front, thinking "yes, I know that one", and flipping is recognition, not recall — and recognition is a poor guide to what will come out under exam pressure.

Step 5 — Move the card. Got it fully right? Move it back one box. Got it wrong, or only half right, or needed a nudge? It goes back to Box 1 — not back one box, all the way to the front. The demotion is what makes the system honest.

Step 6 — Retire cards from Box 5. Once a card has survived Box 5 twice, take it out and put it in a "done" envelope. Bring the envelope back out in the last fortnight before the exam for one final pass.

Why the demotion rule matters

The temptation is to move a shaky card back one box rather than all the way to Box 1, because Box 1 is starting to feel crowded. Resist it. A crowded Box 1 is a completely accurate picture of what you do not yet know, and it is the most useful piece of information you have. Students who soften the demotion rule end up with a tidy box and an unpleasant surprise in the mock.

If Box 1 becomes genuinely unmanageable — say more than forty cards for one subject — that is a signal about the content, not the system. It usually means the cards are too big: one card is carrying a whole process rather than a single fact. Split them.

What makes a good card

The box only works if the cards are answerable. A few rules that save a lot of wasted effort:

One question, one answer, and a question you could actually be asked. If the back of the card runs to a paragraph, it is really three cards.

Notice how short most days are. That is the point — the box is a daily habit, not a revision session. It sits alongside past papers and written practice rather than replacing them. The Education Endowment Foundation's work on metacognition and self-regulated learning consistently points towards students who monitor and adjust their own study getting more out of it, and the box makes that monitoring almost automatic: you can see, physically, what you know.

Adapting it for several subjects

Two workable approaches. Either run one box per subject, which keeps sessions focused, or run a single box with colour-coded cards, which forces you to switch between subjects mid-session. The single-box version is harder and, for most students, better — jumping between a chemistry card and a history card mirrors the switching your brain has to do across a real exam timetable.

If you go for one box, use a different card colour or a coloured dot per subject so you can still see at a glance whether one subject is clogging Box 1.

Common mistakes

  • Making the cards and never working the box. Making cards feels like revision and is only the setup.
  • Reading both sides. Always attempt the answer first.
  • Being generous. "I nearly had it" means Box 1.
  • Starting in March. The box rewards months, not weeks. Start it when you start the course content, not when the exam timetable comes out.
  • Writing cards from the textbook without understanding first. Flashcards consolidate knowledge; they do not create it. Read, understand, then make the card.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Leitner box better than an app like Anki?

They use the same underlying idea. The app schedules more precisely and travels in your pocket; the box is free, has no notifications, and the physical act of writing the card is itself useful revision. If phone distraction is a problem — and for many students it is — the box wins on that alone. Plenty of students run both: an app for vocabulary, a box for everything else.

How many cards should I make per topic?

Fewer than you think. Ten to fifteen sharp cards for a KS3 topic, twenty to thirty for a substantial GCSE topic. If you find yourself writing eighty cards for one topic, you are copying the textbook onto card, which is transcription rather than revision.

My child made lovely cards and still did badly. What went wrong?

Almost always the retrieval step. Cards get used as a reading aid rather than a test — front, flip, "yes I knew that", next. Sit with them once and insist on the answer being said out loud before the card turns. The drop in accuracy on the first honest run-through is usually startling, and entirely healthy.

Does the Leitner box work for essay subjects?

For the knowledge layer, yes — quotations, dates, key terms, case studies, definitions. It does not build argument or structure, which need timed written practice. Treat the box as the thing that keeps the raw material available, and past-paper essays as the thing that teaches you to use it.
