How do you draw and read a pictogram?

A pictogram uses a repeated symbol (a picture, icon, or shape) where each symbol represents a fixed number of items. The key always states what one symbol is worth.

Reading a pictogram: Multiply the number of symbols in each row by the key value. For fractional symbols (e.g. a half-symbol), calculate the corresponding fraction of the key value.

How do you draw a pictogram?

  1. Choose an appropriate key value. The key should make the number of symbols for each category manageable (ideally 1–10 symbols per row). If the frequencies are 12, 20, 8, and 4, a key of "= 4" gives 3, 5, 2, and 1 symbol per row — clear and easy to draw.
  2. Draw the symbols in neat rows, one row per category. Always use the same size and spacing.
  3. Draw fractional symbols for any frequency that is not a multiple of the key value. Common fractions are ½ (half-shaded) and ¼.
  4. Write the key clearly, stating what one complete symbol represents.
  5. Add a title and label each row.

Tip: Choose a key value that is a factor of most frequencies to minimise partial symbols. If frequencies are 6, 12, 9, and 15, a key of 3 is ideal.

What is the difference between a tally chart and a frequency table?

A tally chart is used while collecting data — you add tallies as each observation occurs. A frequency table (or frequency chart) is the finished product: it shows the final counted totals in a neat table. You typically convert a tally chart into a frequency table once data collection is complete.

When should you choose a pictogram over a bar chart?

Pictograms are visual and engaging — they work well in reports or posters aimed at a general audience where approximate comparisons are needed. Bar charts are more precise and better suited to comparing exact frequencies across many categories. For data with large frequencies (e.g. hundreds or thousands), a bar chart is almost always clearer because partial symbols become awkward.

What key value should I choose for a pictogram?

Pick a key value that divides evenly into as many frequencies as possible. If your frequencies are 10, 25, 15, and 5, a key of 5 gives whole numbers of symbols for every row (2, 5, 3, and 1). Avoid a key so small that one row needs more than 10 symbols — the diagram becomes crowded and hard to read.

How do you handle a frequency that is not divisible by the key?

Use a fractional symbol. For a key of 4, a frequency of 6 is shown as 1 whole symbol and 1 half-symbol (1½ symbols = 1 × 4 + ½ × 4 = 4 + 2 = 6). Quarters are also common. If the fraction is awkward (e.g. ⅓), reconsider your key.

Why do tally marks come in groups of five?
