Because a Deep Owl treats every question as worth doing properly, and an exam does not reward that. Stage 1 — Make the cost visible

Take a marked paper and work out, question by question, roughly how many marks were available in the unanswered questions. Then look at the over-answered early ones and ask: how many extra marks did the extra detail earn? Usually the answer is none, because the mark scheme had already been satisfied.

Deep Owls respond to reasoning far more than to instruction. Seeing that thirty minutes of careful extra work earned zero marks while eight available marks went untouched is a genuinely persuasive argument to this type — much more so than "you need to speed up".

Stage 2 — Teach mark-to-minute budgeting

Work out the paper's rate: total marks against total minutes. A 90-mark paper in 105 minutes is roughly one minute per mark with fifteen minutes spare. Write the target finishing time next to each question before starting.

Stage 3 — Practise stopping, deliberately

It will feel wrong. That is the point — the discomfort of leaving something incomplete is exactly the habit being retrained. Repeat it enough that stopping becomes automatic rather than a decision made under pressure in the hall.

Stage 4 — Teach the sweep-back

Reserve the last ten minutes to return to anything left short. This gives a Deep Owl somewhere to put the impulse to complete things, which makes stopping tolerable. Knowing there is a scheduled return is often what allows them to move on the first time.

What not to do

Do not tell them to write less. Heard as "your thoroughness is a fault", which is both untrue and demoralising for a type whose depth is their strength. The message is about where the depth goes, not whether it should exist.

Do not add more content revision. The instinctive response to a poor mock is more revision, and for a Deep Owl with a timing problem it is wasted effort. They already knew the material for the questions they never reached.

Do not practise untimed. Untimed practice reinforces the habit that is causing the problem. Every practice paper from now on should have a clock on it, even if the paper is short.

Do not assume access arrangements are the answer. Extra time is available to students who meet specific criteria, assessed by the school, and it exists for particular needs — not as a general remedy for pacing.
