For much of the early phase, the Soviets led: first satellite, first living creature, first human in orbit. This sequence of Soviet successes terrified American policymakers. President John F. Kennedy responded in May 1961 — just weeks after the humiliation of the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba — by committing the USA to landing a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. It was a bold and deliberately ambitious target.

Who was Yuri Gagarin and what did his flight prove?

Yuri Gagarin was a Soviet air force pilot from a rural family near Moscow. On 12 April 1961, he was launched into orbit aboard Vostok 1, completed one orbit of the Earth in 108 minutes, and was ejected from his capsule to parachute back to the ground separately (the capsule landing system was deemed too rough for a human passenger). He was 27 years old.

NASA's Apollo programme was the American response to the Soviet lead. It required engineering on a scale never attempted before:

  1. The Saturn V rocket — developed under Wernher von Braun, a former German wartime rocket engineer — stood 111 metres tall, weighed 2,800 tonnes at launch and remains the most powerful rocket ever flown.
  2. Three missions tested components before crewed Moon missions (Apollo 7, 8, 9, 10 tested the capsule, orbited the Moon and practised the lunar module).

How did the Space Race end?

The Moon landing of 1969 is generally regarded as the American victory in the Space Race — the ultimate prize, achieved first. But the competition did not end there. The USA launched more Apollo missions, the USSR developed space stations (Salyut, then Mir), and eventually both sides recognised that cooperation was cheaper and more productive than competition.

The symbolic endpoint came in July 1975 when an American Apollo capsule and a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft docked in orbit — the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Astronauts and cosmonauts shook hands in space. It also reveals how quickly priorities change when the political incentive shifts. After 1969, American public interest in the Moon programme collapsed. Apollo 20, 19 and 18 were cancelled. The Apollo programme ended in 1972. Half a century later, the Moon has not been visited since. The driving force was always political, not purely scientific — and when the political need was met, the funding followed.
