Between roughly 1300 and 1600, European scholars, artists and scientists rediscovered the wisdom of ancient Greece and Rome — and added ideas of their own. Leonardo da Vinci deserves particular attention because his notebooks — filled with drawings of anatomy, flying machines, weapons and water flow — are primary sources for both art history and the history of science. They also show something important: Renaissance figures did not think in the disciplinary silos we use today. "Art" and "science" were aspects of the same project: understanding the world through careful observation.
How did the printing press change the Renaissance?
Johannes Gutenberg's development of movable type printing (c.1450) is often described as the technological engine of the Renaissance — and the case is strong. Before printing, books had to be copied by hand, which made them expensive, rare and slow to spread. A single monastic scriptorium might take months to produce one copy of a classical text.
By 1500, there were printing presses in over 200 European cities, and an estimated 20 million books had been produced. The immediate effects were:
