Population distribution describes where people live across the world, and population density measures how many people share a given area. Understanding why some regions are densely populated and others almost empty is a core KS3 geography skill that connects physical factors to human decision-making.

What is the difference between population distribution and population density?

These two terms are related but distinct, and using them precisely matters in geography:

  • Population distribution describes the pattern of where people live — the spatial arrangement of population across a country, region, or the world. It is usually shown on a dot map (one dot = a fixed number of people) or a choropleth map (areas shaded by population category).
  • Population density is a calculated figure: the number of people per unit area, usually per square kilometre (km²).

Worked example — calculating population density:

The United Kingdom has approximately 67 million people and a total area of approximately 243,000 km².
Population density = total population ÷ total area
Population density = 67,000,000 ÷ 243,000 ≈ 276 people per km²

Compare this with:

  • Bangladesh: approximately 165 million people, 148,000 km² → approximately 1,115 people per km² (one of the highest densities of any large country)
  • Australia: approximately 26 million people, 7,688,000 km² → approximately 3.4 people per km²
  • Mongolia: approximately 3.3 million people, 1,564,000 km² → approximately 2.1 people per km²

A national average density is useful for comparison but hides enormous internal variation. The UK average of 276/km² conceals the contrast between London (approximately 5,700/km²) and the Scottish Highlands (fewer than 10/km² in many areas).

What physical factors affect population distribution?

Physical geography strongly influences where people can live, especially in historical societies before the technology to overcome environmental constraints existed. Five physical factors are particularly important for KS3:

1. Relief (shape of the land). Steep, mountainous terrain is difficult to farm, build on, and access. Mountain ranges such as the Himalayas, the Andes, and the Scottish Highlands are sparsely populated relative to the lowland areas surrounding them. Flat lowland plains — the Ganges Plain in India, the North China Plain, the Indo-Gangetic Plain — are among the most densely populated areas on Earth because they are easy to farm and build on.

2. Climate. Extreme climates limit agricultural productivity and human comfort. Very hot deserts (the Sahara, the Arabian Desert, the Australian Outback) and very cold environments (Siberia, Arctic Canada, Greenland) are sparsely populated. Temperate climates with reliable rainfall and moderate temperatures — much of Western Europe, eastern North America, and parts of East Asia — support the highest agricultural productivity and population densities.

3. Soil quality. Fertile soils capable of supporting agriculture attract permanent settlement. The most fertile soils in the world — river floodplains (alluvial soils), volcanic soils, and glacial-drift soils — concentrate population. The Lower Nile Valley in Egypt has one of the world's longest histories of dense settlement, entirely because of its extraordinarily fertile annual flood deposits.

4. Water supply. Human settlement requires reliable access to fresh water for drinking, agriculture, and hygiene. Rivers and lakes acted as settlement magnets throughout history; coastal areas with reliable rainfall are more settled than interior regions where water is scarce.

5. Natural resources. The discovery of minerals, fuels, or other resources can rapidly increase population density in previously sparse areas. The coalfields of South Wales and Yorkshire drove rapid population growth in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Oil discovery has increased population in parts of the Middle East.

What human factors affect population distribution?

Human decisions, economic forces, and historical events overlay the physical constraints and sometimes override them:

Where are the world's most and least densely populated areas?

Most densely populated regions (global scale):

  • South Asia (Bangladesh, eastern India, Pakistan) — fertile river plains, long agricultural history
  • East Asia (eastern China, Japan, South Korea) — intensive agriculture, industrialisation
  • Western Europe — temperate climate, long industrial and commercial history
  • The Nile Valley and Delta

Least densely populated regions:

  • Hot deserts (Sahara, Arabian Desert, Australian Outback) — extreme heat and water scarcity
  • Cold environments (Greenland, northern Canada, Siberia, Antarctica) — extreme cold, short growing seasons

How is population distributed across the UK?

The UK provides a manageable national-scale case study for population distribution:

  • South East England and London are by far the most densely populated areas, reflecting the concentration of finance, government, services, and transport links.
  • The English Midlands are densely settled, with a history of industrial manufacturing (Birmingham, Coventry, Nottingham).
  • South Wales and parts of northern England (Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester) retain relatively high densities from their industrial past, though some areas have experienced population decline following deindustrialisation.
  • Scotland, northern England, and Wales have large areas of sparse population, corresponding to upland areas with thin soils, harsh climate, and limited economic opportunity.

How do geographers show population distribution on maps?

Three main map types are used. A dot map places a dot at a fixed location for every fixed number of people (e.g. one dot = 10,000 people) — it shows the actual spatial pattern clearly but becomes cluttered in very dense areas. A choropleth map divides an area into regions (countries, districts) and shades each region according to its population density — easier to read but disguises variation within each region. An isopleth map draws lines connecting points of equal population density — less common but shows gradients clearly.

Why is Bangladesh so densely populated?

Bangladesh combines several factors that promote high population density: the Bengal delta of the Ganges-Brahmaputra river system provides some of the world's most fertile alluvial soils; the monsoon climate delivers reliable rainfall for rice cultivation; the geography — a vast, flat, low-lying plain — makes land easy to farm and build on; and the region has a very long history of dense agricultural settlement. Does a high population density always mean overcrowding?

Not necessarily — this is an important distinction. High population density combined with adequate infrastructure, housing, services, and economic opportunity may produce a high quality of life. The Netherlands has a population density of approximately 500 people per km² and consistently scores highly on human development indices. Bangladesh, with a similar density, faces significantly greater challenges because of lower average incomes and less developed infrastructure. Population density is a measure of how many people share a given area, not of whether those people have enough space, resources, or services.

How does population distribution connect to migration in geography?

Population distribution is not fixed — it changes over time as people migrate from sparsely to densely populated areas (or vice versa). The movement of rural populations to cities (rural to urban migration) is currently reshaping population distribution across South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and China, rapidly increasing urban density while rural areas lose population. In the UK, the shift from manufacturing to service industries has drawn population towards London and the South East, while former manufacturing cities in the Midlands and north have seen relative population decline.
