On 6 August 1945, an American B-29 bomber dropped the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare on the Japanese city of Hiroshima; a second fell on Nagasaki three days later. Japan surrendered within a week. The decision, and whether it was justified, remains one of the most debated moral questions in modern history.

What was the context for the atomic bombs?

By the summer of 1945, the Second World War in Europe had ended (Germany surrendered on 8 May 1945), but the war in the Pacific continued. Japan had suffered devastating conventional air raids — including the firebombing of Tokyo in March 1945, which killed an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 people in a single night — and was losing territory across the Pacific, but its military leadership refused to consider surrender.

American military planners were preparing for an invasion of the Japanese home islands, codenamed Operation Downfall. Their estimates of Allied casualties from such an invasion ranged widely — from hundreds of thousands to over a million — based partly on the ferocity of resistance at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, where Japanese forces fought almost to the last man. Japanese civilian casualties from an invasion were expected to be enormous.

The atomic bomb programme, the Manhattan Project, had been developing in secret since 1942, employing over 130,000 people at facilities across the USA. On 16 July 1945, the first atomic bomb was successfully tested at Alamogordo, New Mexico. President Harry Truman, who had taken office in April 1945 after Roosevelt's death, made the decision to use the weapons against Japan.

What happened at Hiroshima?

The bomb dropped on Hiroshima was codenamed "Little Boy." It used uranium-235 and had an explosive yield equivalent to approximately 15 kilotons of TNT (15,000 tonnes of conventional explosive). It was dropped by the B-29 Enola Gay at 08:15 local time on 6 August 1945, detonating at about 600 metres altitude above the city centre.

The effects:

  • The blast: A pressure wave and fireball destroyed everything within about 1.6 km of the detonation point. Buildings further out were severely damaged by the blast wave.
  • The heat: Ground temperatures near the hypocentre reached several thousand degrees Celsius. People within about 1 km were killed instantly; many further away suffered severe burns.
  • The radiation: Both initial gamma radiation and nuclear fallout caused radiation sickness, which killed people in the days and weeks that followed.
  • Deaths: Approximately 70,000–80,000 people died immediately; by the end of 1945, the death toll from the bomb and its effects is estimated at 90,000–166,000.

Three days later, on 9 August, a second bomb codenamed "Fat Man" (a plutonium implosion weapon with a yield of approximately 21 kilotons) was dropped on Nagasaki. The original target that day had been Kokura, but clouds obscured it and the crew flew to the secondary target. Nagasaki's valley geography partly contained the blast. Approximately 40,000 people died immediately; total deaths by the end of 1945 are estimated at 60,000–80,000.

Why did Japan surrender?

Japan's Emperor Hirohito announced Japan's surrender on 15 August 1945. The role of the atomic bombs in this decision remains contested.

The standard American argument has been that the bombs forced a rapid surrender that avoided the enormous casualties of an invasion. This argument has genuine force: Japanese military leadership had been planning to defend the home islands with a mass mobilisation of civilians armed with bamboo spears, and had shown at Okinawa and Iwo Jima that surrender was not part of their strategic vocabulary.

However, historians have complicated this picture:

  • The Soviet Union declared war on Japan on 8 August 1945 (the day between the two bombs), launching a massive invasion of Japanese-held Manchuria. Some historians argue that Soviet entry into the war was as significant as the bombs in convincing Japan's leaders that further resistance was impossible.
  • Japan's Supreme War Council was already debating surrender conditions before Hiroshima, deadlocked over whether to accept any surrender that removed the Emperor's sovereignty.
  • Emperor Hirohito's own account, given after the war, cited the bombs as the reason for surrender. But this may have been convenient — it allowed Japan to portray itself as a victim of an unprecedented weapon rather than a defeated aggressor.

Was the decision to use the atomic bombs justified?

This is one of the genuinely open moral debates in modern history, and there is no consensus among historians. The main positions are:

Arguments for justification:

  • An invasion would have killed far more people — Japanese and Allied — than the bombs did.
  • Japan's military leadership had shown they would not surrender without an overwhelming shock.
  • The bombs ended a war that had already killed tens of millions of people.

Arguments against justification:

  • The bombs killed overwhelmingly civilian targets — Hiroshima had military significance, but the victims were mostly non-combatants.
  • Japan may have been close to surrender anyway, given Soviet entry into the war and the destruction of its navy and air force.
  • Using atomic weapons on cities established a precedent for targeting civilian populations with weapons of mass destruction.

What were the longer-term consequences?

The atomic bombings shaped the post-war world directly. The Soviet Union tested its first atomic bomb in 1949, just four years after Hiroshima. The nuclear arms race that followed was the defining feature of Cold War insecurity — both superpowers spent decades developing weapons capable of destroying civilisation. The concept of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) — the idea that any nuclear first strike would invite a retaliatory strike destroying both sides — became the logic of nuclear deterrence that still operates today.

Japan's constitution, written under American occupation in 1947, contains Article 9 — a renunciation of war and the maintenance of war potential. It remains in force, and Japan has no offensive military capability. The memory of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is deeply embedded in Japanese culture and identity, expressed annually in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony on 6 August.
