What do 6-mark questions look like?
Six-mark questions appear in GCSE geography papers under several command words. The most common are:

What does "developing a point" mean?
A developed point links a geographical fact to a consequence or mechanism. The simplest structure is Point → Development → Evidence (PDE):

- Development: explain the mechanism — why does this cause that? How does the process work?
- Evidence: name a specific place, statistic, or case study

- Plan three points before writing. Jot down your three PDE points in a margin or on scrap paper. One minute of planning prevents wandering answers.
- Write each point in at least three sentences. One sentence for the point, one for the mechanism, one for the evidence. If a point takes fewer than three sentences, it is probably not developed enough.
- Use precise geographical vocabulary. Replace "area" with the specific biome, region, or country. Replace "people" with the specific group (subsistence farmers, urban migrants, elderly population). Replace "effects" with the specific type (economic effects, environmental impacts, social consequences).
- Check your answer against the PDE frame. Read each paragraph back. Does it state a point? Does it explain the mechanism? Does it give specific evidence?
What mistakes do students commonly make?
Listing without developing: "Tropical storms are caused by warm water, low pressure, and the Coriolis effect." This names three factors but explains none of them — it is a Level 1 answer.
Describing instead of explaining: "The flooding destroyed homes and roads." This is a description. Explaining adds how and why: "The flooding destroyed homes and roads because the combination of storm surge and intense rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems that were not designed for rainfall rates above 50 mm per hour."
Forgetting named examples: Level 3 answers include specific places, dates, or data. "A tropical storm" is weaker than "Hurricane Maria (2017) in Puerto Rico."
Writing a conclusion when none is needed. A 6-mark question does not require you to sum up your answer. Use the time to develop your second or third point instead.

Is a 6-mark question different on AQA and Edexcel?
Yes, in some details. AQA typically uses levels-based marking for 6-mark questions and allocates 2–3 marks for SPaG within extended questions on the paper as a whole. Edexcel GCSE Geography B uses "extended prose" questions with similar levels marking. OCR GCSE Geography uses a similar approach. What counts as good "evidence" in a 6-mark answer?
A named location is better than a general reference. A statistic is stronger than a vague claim ("most people"). A named case study with specific detail ("the Soufrière Hills eruption on Montserrat, beginning in 1995") is better than a generic reference ("a volcanic eruption"). The function of evidence is to prove that your generalisation holds true in a specific real-world context, so the more specific and accurate it is, the more convincing it becomes.
