  • Pupils in upper sets throughout KS3 are typically entered for Higher tier, which opens the grade 7, 8, and 9 range.
  • Pupils in lower sets throughout KS3 are sometimes entered for Foundation tier by default, which caps the maximum grade at 5 — even if a pupil's performance has improved substantially by Year 11.

Not necessarily. A-level Maths typically requires GCSE Maths grade 7 or above. A pupil who enters Year 10 in a middle or lower KS3 set, works hard, and achieves a strong Higher tier GCSE grade can and does access A-level Maths. The risk is that a Foundation tier entry automatically caps the grade at 5, making A-level Maths impossible regardless of effort in Year 11. Parents of KS3 pupils with A-level ambitions should explicitly discuss Higher tier entry with the school early in Year 10.
