GCSE Art (Art and Design) is about personal creative expression, exploration of artistic ideas and development of a visual portfolio through fine art, photography or textiles. GCSE Design and Technology is about solving problems through making, using materials science and iterative design processes. What does GCSE Art and Design involve?

How do the portfolio demands compare?
Both subjects demand sustained effort over two years, but the nature of that effort differs.
In Art, the portfolio is the primary vehicle of assessment. Sketchbooks in GCSE Art are not supplementary — they are the core of the subject. Students who produce rich, visually experimental sketchbooks showing genuine artistic development tend to do well even if their technical skill is still developing. Quantity and quality of exploration matter as much as the final piece.
In D&T, the design portfolio documents the process behind the made outcome. It must show investigation, idea generation, development and evaluation. However, the made product itself also contributes significantly to marks — a well-made item with thin portfolio documentation will score less than a solid made item backed by thorough process documentation. Which subject is better for university and careers?
