A student who does not know the content and a student who knows it but cannot deploy it under exam conditions can end up with the same grade. The revision that fixes each is completely different, so working out which problem you have is the highest-value hour of revision available.

How to diagnose it from one past paper

This takes about forty minutes and is worth more than a week of unfocused revision.

  1. Sit a full paper under proper timing. No notes, no pauses. Untimed practice cannot reveal a pacing problem.
  2. Mark it against the real mark scheme, strictly.
  3. For every lost mark, write one word: didn't know, misread, too short, no working, ran out.
  4. Count the categories. The largest pile is your revision plan.
