Answering those questions requires you to connect the fact to your existing knowledge of cell membranes, solute concentrations, and biological transport — creating a web of understanding rather than an isolated fact.

The technique was developed in educational psychology research as a way to move information from surface recall to genuine comprehension. The more connections a piece of knowledge has to other things you know, the more routes the brain has to retrieve it under exam pressure.

How do you use elaborative interrogation in practice?

The technique works in three stages:

Stage 1 — Read a fact or statement from your notes or textbook. Don't highlight it. Understand what it says.

Stage 2 — Ask why or how. Write down one or more questions:

  • Why is this true?
  • How does this connect to [something I already know]?
  • What would happen if this were NOT true?
  • What caused this? What does this cause?

Stage 3 — Answer the question without looking back at the notes. If you can't answer it, re-read the relevant section and try again. Then close the book and explain the answer in your own words.

Applied to GCSE History example (causes of the First World War):
